Busy bees collect sweet nectar

Updated: May 14

  • Use your arms as wings and fly to colourful flower fields

  • Collect nectar and bring it back to your hive

    • using your hands

    • using your feet

Did you know that bees are amazing nectar collectors? Bees fly from flower to flower, using their long tongues to sip nectar. They store this sweet liquid in a special stomach called a honey stomach! The bees then bring the nectar back to their hive, where it is turned into delicious honey. Bees are super important because as they collect nectar, they also pollinate flowers helping plants grow and make new seeds. Let's buzz around like bees, collecting nectar to make yummy honey and help our flowers grow!

Lie with your front on a cushion tower in arch shape: ankles squeezed, feet and chest off the floor. Pretend to fly like a bee. Move your arms all the way up and down, stopping just above the floor: 10 times slow, 5 times faster.

You have arrived at a beautiful flower field. Spread out a tea towel one side in front of your cushion tower and add 10-15 rolled-up pairs of socks as flowers. Place another tea towel on the other side of your tower as your hive. Get back on your cushion tower to fly over the field. Pick up one pair of socks with the closer hand, pass it to your other hand and place it down into the beehive. Well done, you have collected your first nectar! Keep in flying position with your chest and feet off the floor to collect all the remaining nectar.

You have collected all the nectar on this field. It’s time to fly again: 10 slow, 5 faster flaps with your wings - off you go to the next field! Arrived. This time, you can only transport the nectar using your feet. Move your cushion tower forward between both towels. While sitting in a supported tuck position, use your feet to pick up one pair of socks. Then, carefully move the socks over the tower and place them down on the other side in your hive. Repeat until you have transported all the nectar back home.

Off to the next field - jump back on your cushion tower for 10 slow and 5 faster wing flaps! Collecting all the nectar in this field will be more challenging. You can choose to start in a tucked balance or resting on your lower arms – or why not try both versions?

Wow, you've flown a long way today to collect all this nectar. Great job! Did you know, for just one teaspoon of honey, 12 bees need to work for 3 weeks, each flying over 100 miles and visiting over 100,000 flowers? That's incredible teamwork! Hope you enjoyed buzzing and collecting nectar like busy bees! 🐝
