Pippi Longstocking with her bright, colourful dance ribbon

Updated: May 14

  • Build your own dance ribbon from found treasure.

  • Make beautiful ribbon figures:

    • Coils and snakes with your wrist,

    • Wheels in wheel and mirror plane with your shoulder.

  • Put on your favourite song and create a ribbon dance.

  • Which song did you choose? Write in the comments.

Pippi is a little girl with bright red hair that sticks out in braids. She lives in a big house all by herself called Villa Villekulla. Pippi is incredibly strong – she can lift her horse with one hand! She's also very clever and always finds herself in exciting situations with her friends Tommy and Annika. Pippi doesn't go to school. Instead, she spends her days making up stories, playing games, and enjoying lots of sweets. Pippi is unique because she does everything her own way, and her joyful spirit and kindness make her a great friend to everyone she meets.

Pretend to be Pippi and let’s go on a treasure hunt in your own home! Search for a trusty pencil and a colourful ribbon – maybe hidden away in a drawer or tucked amidst your craft supplies? Next, tie the ribbon around the end of your pencil, and there we go – your very own dance ribbon! Or maybe you find other treasures like an old wooden spoon, a tossing ring, a small branch and rainbow strings or some lace fabric you could use instead? It is your choice. Who needs ordinary when you can make extraordinary things happen, just like Pippi Longstocking?

Let's put that dance ribbon to good use and create some ribbon figures. Make sure you have plenty of space around you.

Hold your dance ribbon with your index finger on top and focus on moving just your wrist. You can rotate your wrist to make ribbon coils or move it side to side to make ribbon snakes. Can you make those ribbon figures using your other hand? Fantastic!

Let's get creative and add in some gymnastics shapes while gracefully moving your ribbon:

  • Stand tall and straight like a pencil

  • Stretch out into a star shape

  • Try bending forward into standing pike position, keeping your legs and back straight

  • Or balance on one leg in tree shape or arabesque

In which other gymnastics shapes or balances can you coil and snake your dance ribbon?

Don’t worry if you end up in a tangle – try pointing the end of your pencil more towards the floor.

Let’s explore some larger ribbon figures. Only move your shoulder to create big, sweeping circles with your ribbon. Try making circles at your side (wheel plane) or in front of you (mirror plane). Looking good! Now, let's add some movement! You might need to go outside for more space. Run, skip, leap, or hop around while circling your ribbon. See how the ribbon moves and flows with your movements! Maybe you can even run or leap through the loops you create?

Now that you've practiced moving your ribbon, let’s put it all together in a colourful dance. Play your favourite song and swing your ribbon high, low, and around to the beats. Let your ribbon follow the music as you groove and move. Which song did you choose - write the song in the comments.
